Today’s job market is more saturated than ever with high-quality candidates. But that’s not the real problem, since it’s rare you’ll be the only one qualified for a job: getting hired will always mean surviving a hotly competitive situation. One way to increase your chances is to make yourself more attractive to the company, and the hiring manager, you’re trying to work for. Here are some simple and effective ways to do that:
Believe In Yourself: There is just no substitute for confidence, as opposed to bravado. If you do enough research and take enough time to prepare, you can usually get to the point where you honestly believe you are right for almost any position that you want. If you believe this deeply enough, you’ll take a giant step toward helping others recognize and believe it, too.
Bring Your Accomplishments: Many people focus their resume and/or their presentation during job interviews on their past responsibilities, job titles, and pay scales. Forget all that. Instead, bring your accomplishments. Every chance you get, talk about the results you delivered in your previous positions. Hiring managers will sit up and take notice.
Delete Those Ticks: “Oh”, “uh”, “ah”, “umm”, “you know”, and “like” are among the most common speech “ticks” that people use unconsciously to fill the air with noise while they’re thinking. To listeners, they’re distracting, obnoxious, and signposts of inadequacy. Train yourself to stay quiet instead. If you actually need time to think of how to answer a question, there’s no harm in saying: “What a great question! Let me think about that for a moment.” In addition to speech ticks, there are body language ticks: flicking your hair, touching your chin or cheek, shifting in your chair, momentarily twisting your mouth, cracking your knuckles, and so forth. Get rid of those, too, and you’ll present a far more attractive package to the interviewer.
Fit With The Hiring Manager’s Hot Buttons: As you research the company you’re going for, try to discover as much as you can about the people with whom you’ll be interviewing. Many people today are well represented on the Internet, so you may have a chance to find out if they have a family, what hobbies they pursue, what they feel is important in their lives, and so forth. Be aware of these matters, so when you’re with them you can emphasize those parts of yourself they’ll most appreciate.
Match The Company Culture: Whether you restrict your application process to companies that match your style, or you remake yourself to emphasize the culture of the company you’re going for, being a good match is a great attractant to hiring managers. Before you go for an interview, research the company to discover dress styles, management attitudes, employment policies, and — perhaps by talking to people who work there — the corporate culture. Knowing what the place is like, and you can tune the way you present yourself to look extra good from their point of view.
Stay Relaxed: There’s no end of evidence that tension, nervousness, and fear all impair a person’s performance. Conversely, relaxation tends to improve it. So make sure you’re relaxed when you go in for that interview. We’re not advocating drugs, but conscious relaxation techniques, including ten deep breaths in a row, visualizing your calm scene, and doing your homework thoroughly enough that you feel completely prepared and ready.
