When a Job Becomes a Career - Losing Yourself in Transition

By : Tony Jacowski

Some people start out working a job to get themselves through school or trying to get by until they have the time and means to land their dream career. Everyone has those first few jobs while they're in school or transitioning between school and their career, and they can leave a great impression on people for many years to come. However, some people end up losing themselves in their jobs and turn them into careers, even if it wasn't their first choice. Whether it's because of the convenience, the comfort, or the money, people find many great reasons to stay put in what used to be a part-time job instead of following through on the career that they really want.

Many people prefer the comfort of their current jobs, even when they are miserable, to having to start a whole new career life of their own. It seems easier to just try and move up where they're currently employed, than to strike out and start over on their career and have to work their way up all over again. There are plenty of people who fall victim to this, and you shouldn't feel like you are alone in your lost transition. Getting out of the rut means doing whatever it takes to get the job that you actually want as a career. If that means education, go back to school while you're working. If that means training, get it. Do whatever you need to do, and don't just sit there doing nothing because you don't know where to start.

Everything in life is scary at first. However, if you never experience change, you might miss out on some great opportunities. Take the time to remember what you wanted for your life whenever you start to get scared of changing jobs. Think about all the great things that you'll get and focus less on the actual change and you'll likely have an easier time in the process of transition. Don't let your 'for now' job become your forever career if you don't truly love it or if you have something better in mind for your future. Never sell yourself short, because at the end of the day, your happiness is all that matters.

It's far too easy, especially in today's chaotic economy, to stay put because it's safe. However, you have to remember that the bigger risks you take, the bigger rewards you will receive. And keep in mind that no one can tell you what is best for you. That is a decision that you have to make on your own. Don't get stuck in a dead end job because it is comfortable, and never give up on your career dreams, no matter how impossible they seem.
