Bumping Into Students Outside of School

By : Jim S Dean

It would be naive to think that you will only ever see your students inside school. Often you see them in town on a Saturday afternoon. Sometimes you see them at the movies and, if you teach older students such as those in college, sometimes you even go to the same pubs and clubs.

One of the strange mysteries of life is why students find the idea of teachers having a life outside of school so incredibly fascinating. Any interesting snippets of gossip about what you do on the weekend or what your partner looks like will always be lapped up eagerly. This explains why, if you do see your students outside of school, you can guarantee that: they will almost certainly try to stop you and engage in some small talk with you, and you will get grilled about your antics once you get back to the school.

Remember, to avoid any gossip, always be as honest as you can about your life away from school, but don't feel like you have to give away too much information. It is not advisable to tell students any specific details that they do not need to know, such as where you live, which clubs or shops you frequent, or information about your family.

If you do bump into students outside of school, take time to be friendly and say hello, but make it obvious that you are also doing things in your own time, in order to discourage students "hanging on". While your employer may desire you to be a positive role model and ambassador for the school at all times, this is not always possible. You are entitled to have a life outside school after all.

However, regardless of how embarrassing or awkward any chance meetings may be, stay positive and in control and, if necessary, slip briefly into your "teacher mode" until you can make your escape.
