Researching Canadian Police Investigation Techniques

By : Colin Mclean

For Canadian detective or other law enforcement officials, homicide and other major investigations all have one thing in common: commencement with a sizable workforce response that can often lead up to a massive investigation.

Investigations, depending on the severity and notoriety of the case, can assign a crew that might require around-the-clock investigation from several days up to several months. Investigation takes place usually after an arrest is made or every "lead" is exhausted.

Numerous law enforcement officials can be sent to investigate witnesses, family members, homes, hospitals and the scene of the crime. Other officials will work behind the scene with computer checks or police lab work. Generally, the initial response team will number about four or five detectives and a police sergeant.

While detectives usually monitor communications between patrol personnel on the beat and central command, a homicide or priority event is often received directly at the squad office.

Several Rules of Investigation Include:

* Never disturb the crime scene without proper authority
* Request all unauthorized personnel (including family) to leave the crime scene, and establish a barrier
* Make sure the desk office at central command has up-to-date and ongoing information
* Never smoke, eat, or drink at the scene of a crime
* Proper identify all witnesses at the crime scene
* Get all the facts straight
* Take comprehensive notes
* Separate all witnesses during the debriefing stage
