Employment As a Law Enforcement Officer

A career as a law enforcement officer seems to be growing more and more especially with the rise of crime all over the world, due to the struggle with the economy. The demand for law enforcement officers is high and will continue to grow in the future. Officers work with the public to reduce crime and other acts that may violate federal, state and local laws. It can be a very dangerous job depending on the current situation, but if you enjoy helping others than you may enjoy becoming a law enforcement officer.

Because of the need for officers, salaries and benefits are beginning to improve in an attempt to draw more people to the profession. Law enforcement officials can have a variety of different tasks, they may not always be required to be on duty outside of the office. Officers may be required to maintain reports, investigate crimes by interviewing people, making arrests, directing traffic, issuing citations, providing a testimony in the court of law, assisting in car accidents, responding to public disorder, gathering evidence to assist in a crime, etc.

In some instances, you may only be required to have a high school diploma, or equivalent to apply for a position as a law enforcement officer, but in larger departments, you may be required to have a little more education and experience. This may also depend on the state you serve in. Most federal and state agencies require that you have at least a 2 year degree. The best thing to do before applying as a law enforcement officer is to locate the department you want to work for and find out what their specific requirements are, and go from there.

Applicants are required to pass a drug test, physical examination, background check, personality test, and a lie detector test. If these tests are completed successfully, subjects will complete 12 to 14 weeks of training depending on the requirements of the department. In order to be successful as a law enforcement officer, it is important that individuals have critical thinking and strong problem solving skills. This will allow you to decide the proper course of action in certain situations. Officers should strengthen their stress management skills, should have a positive and courageous attitude, and possess stamina.

It is always a good idea to talk to people who work within the career you are looking to begin in to get a feel of what the position will be like.
