How to Start Your Own Mobile Oil Change Business

By : Adam M. Anderson

Everyone needs to get their vehicle's oil changed, but so many people are too busy to get it done as often as they should. A mobile oil change business gives people the opportunity to keep their cars and trucks in top working condition while they do other things like mow the lawn, get dinner ready, or watch the kids.

Tips to Get Started

• Start with rates slightly higher than average, and target wealthier neighborhoods. This will help you cover your costs as you learn the ropes of the business.

• Launch a professionally-designed website that will rank high in the search engine rankings. Every company needs a website these days, because customers believe they add legitimacy to the business or company.

• Uniforms with photo identification and ID badge lanyards put customers at ease that they are not dealing with a fly-by-night operation. You can even have a ribbon lanyard imprinted with your business logo.

Establish a Schedule

Customers need to be reminded to have their oil changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles. Send out cards, emails, or make calls to your customers to help them schedule their next service appointment. If you wait for them to call you, you might lose out on much needed income.

Establish Your Service Area and Routes

It is unlikely that you will be able to cover a very large distance when you first start out. You should define your service area and travels fees in advance. You might find it's easiest to set up fees by mileage and then charge a flat rate for the oil change. If you do go outside of your normal service area for job, let your customers know ahead of time that additional charges may apply.

Try to establish a routine when it comes to make service calls. If your jobs are set up inefficiently, you will waste a lot of time and effort traveling to the next location. Try scheduling jobs in a certain area on the same day. For example, you may want to visit clients on the west side of town on Monday, downtown on Tuesday, north side on Wednesday, etc.

Budget Your time Wisely

The more fleet service clients you have, the better. This is because you can complete a large number of jobs in one place, cutting down significantly on travel time. Experts recommend that at least 60% of your income comes directly from fleet oil change services.

A typical oil change might take about 20 minutes. But when you schedule appointments you should also account for the time you spend chatting with customers. You don't want to be late getting to your next job.

There are a lot of things to consider when started a mobile oil changing business, and we have only scratched the surface here. It is recommended that you get in touch with a small business consultant for more information on the requirements for starting up your own mobile oil change service.
