How to Start Your Own Home Inspection Business

By : Adam M. Anderson

It seems that there is a certain level of job security in the real estate business. Despite the bursting of the real estate bubble, people still need to buy and sell homes. Families get bigger and need more room. Professionals find new jobs and suddenly need to relocate. Retirees find out that they need less house and more time for themselves and travel, so they sell their homes and downsize.

It's not just realtors that can do well in the real estate industry. From bank loans to home inspections, the buying and selling of homes creates plenty of business opportunities for entrepreneurs. Starting your own home inspection business can be a great way to earn a little extra money on the side, or you can grow a sustainable operation that provides you with a steady income to live on.

If you are thinking about starting your own home inspection business, keep the following steps in mind:

• Check to find out what your State, City, Town and /or Country laws are concerning "home inspection licensing." Once you have done what you have to do to comply with all these ordinances, you can then put your business plan into action.

• Think about your business brand and building a website. Even if you work alone at first, consider purchasing a uniform and wear a photo id clip so that customers will feel more confident about you and your business. You can even display your photo ID badge on ribbon lanyards imprinted with your company logo.

• If you are new to the real estate industry, it's probably a good idea to read up on the business and get some experience by working for an established home inspector first. You will gain a lot of valuable experience that will keep you from making mistakes that could cost you your business.

• After you get started, it's a good idea to join a professional organization for home inspectors. Affiliations with the ASHI and NAHI organizations can give your potential customers a sense of security when they decide to do business with you. These organizations also provide professional training, mentoring services and resources that will be invaluable to you as you work to expand your business.

• It is always best if you learn how to do home inspections from a professional. You should learn how to spot problems like water leaks, foundation cracks, and roofing problems. But you also need to be able to explain the circumstances that cause these problems and help homeowners understand the best ways to fix them.

• Most home inspections need to be presented clearly. If you are not good with typing and word processing, it might be a good idea to hire someone to prepare your home inspection reports. Homeowners and lenders need clear and concise information about the properties being inspected.

• Home inspectors also need to acquire errors and omissions insurance before they complete a job. This kind of insurance protects you in the event there is some problem or hazard that you did not catch during your inspection.

The home inspection business can be a rewarding career for those who are dedicated and want to escape the doldrums of office life.
