Do You Love Your Job?

Nov 21, 2010 Esther Spurrill-Jones

The "daily grind" shouldn't really be a grind.

Do you dread going to work? Do you enjoy anything about your jobs other than the paycheque? If you hate it that much, it might be time to look for something else. You cannot be truly fulfilled in life unless you are doing something that fits your skills and personality. If your work makes you stressed and uncomfortable, you should re-evaluate whether it is a good fit for you.

If you are outgoing – a people person – something in sales or customer service may be the right fit for you. Anything where you have lots of contact with other people will fit your personality quite well. Avoid solitary positions like janitorial work or the like. Your strengths are in your interactions with your coworkers and customers. If you are quiet and retiring, you won't find much success in sales. If you are good with numbers, you might like accounting. Figure out what your strengths are and find a job that fits them.

No job is perfect, but if you hate everything about your job, chances are your performance will suffer. If you love your job, your performance will necessarily be better. Of course, every job will have negatives, but in order for the negative parts of your career to be worthwhile for you, you must love the majority of what you do in your job. The best job for you will be the one where you love the work enough that you don't mind the parts you don't enjoy. For example, if you dislike cleaning, but really like to cook, you may find that working in a restaurant as a cook fulfills you even if you sometimes have to clean, because you get to cook every day.

Job related stress can literally make you ill and shorten your life. When this happens, not only are you not enjoying your life at the present, you won't have as much time to enjoy life later. If you are fulfilled in your career, you will have a longer, happier life.

Take a good look at your career. If you feel like a fish trying to climb a tree, that you're not equipped for the job you're trying to do and you're not getting anywhere, it is probably not the right job for you. Don't settle for doing something you hate just because of the paycheque, no matter how nice that paycheque might be. Life is too short to waste it doing something you don't enjoy.
